Speech

Words have power & convey thoughts and emotions. The tongue has the power of life & death, how we choose to use it impacts us & those around us. We will be held accountable for every word that is spoken (Matthew 12:33-37, Proverbs 18:21). Good communication will be examined in the following section.

Good Speech

The following are some characteristics of good speech:

  • Speaking what encourages & builds others up: try to observe the positives in situations, focus on those & speak them! (Ephesians 4:29, Hebrew 3:13, Proverbs 15:4)

  • Honestly & truthfully: Share your feelings honestly & speak truthfully (Proverbs 24:26, 1 Peter 3:10)

  • Gentle & gracious: speak in a relaxed & soft spoken manner, avoid when possible using negative or accusing words (Proverbs 12.:18, 15:1,4, Titus 3:2, Colossians 4:6)

  • Slow to speak, slow to anger, & quick to listen: think before you speak! And make an effort to listen to what the other person is saying and not speak harshly/angrily (James 1:19-20, Proverbs 10:19)
