Human Beings
We are beings created by God in His image (Genesis 1:27). Designed in His likeness and made to fulfill His plans and purposes (Romans 8:28, Hebrews 13:20-21). The following is an understanding of human composition.
Our Composition
Human beings are made of a body, soul and spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:23, Ecclesiastes 12:7, Matthew 10:28, Hebrews 4:12, Romans 10:9, 1 John 3:20, 1 Corinthians 2:16, James 2:26).
The body (the shell/container, temporary): is a person’s physical being and interacts with the physical world around it.
The soul (the part that makes you unique, eternal): is composed of a person’s mind (reasoning, memory), heart (emotions, beliefs, & desires), will (choice).
The spirit (this is who you are, eternal): is a person’s intuition, conscience, and communion with God.
The spirit is the part of someone’s being which became born again is now one with God’s Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:17, John 3:5-6, Romans 9:1, Romans 2:15). We fellowship with God and communicate with Him in spirit! Your spirit never does anything wrong! This is why Jesus does not say spirit when stating what people are to love the Lord with. True worshippers will worship in spirit (John 4:23, Mark 12:30). You should live out of the new life in your spirit and it will flow out to your soul, then to your body. This is done by following Jesus & believing the truth about who you are! (Romans 8:6-11, John 6:63, 7:37-39, Galatians 6:8). How a human is made is shown in the figure below.
Mind
The mind is unique in that it is the central hub which processes all information gathered from the body, soul, and spirit. We have the mind of Christ which is a wonderful thing! (1 Corinthians 2:16, Ephesians 4:23, Hebrews 8:10). We can have very short or random thoughts which are not good or helpful, these are not our thoughts as we are a new creation, unless we focus on them. These thoughts can arise from the enemy or out of old things we used to do, or inviting sin into our life (Romans 12:2, 1 Peter 5:8-9, 2 Corinthians 2:10-11). The simplest thing to do is to fix your thoughts on Jesus, ask Him for help and think about what He has done for you, and the truth that you are a new creation. Those fleeting thoughts do not define you! (Hebrews 12:1-2, Philippians 4:8, 2 Corinthians 5:17, 10:5).
Heart
The heart is unique in which it is the part we believe and experience emotion with. When you believe in Jesus you are given a new heart! (Ezekiel 36:26, Jeremiah 32:39, Hebrews 8:10, Romans 10:9, Proverbs 14:10). The heart and its beliefs have a huge impact on how we live out our lives! Emotions are an indicator of what we believe. Believing God and what He says about who He is and what He says about who you are, is super important! (Proverbs 4:23, 2 Peter 1:3-9, James 4:8).
