Dream Interpretation

It is helpful, after having a dream, to write it down upon waking up in enough detail that it will jog your memory. Include things like: what emotions you were experiencing, location, people or beings present. In general anything that sticks out. However, not too much detail that you spend a long time writing it down or over scrutinizing the details. Additionally, it is recommended to put the date on which the dream occurred.

Guide

The first part is to discern the source of the dream. To help with this the following are a few points to help with the discernment process:

  • Ask the Holy Spirit to bring to mind if He is trying to communicate with you in this way and see if your conscious confirms  (John 14:15-31, Romans 2:15)

  • If you been thinking about something a lot and now it is showing up in your dreams it may be generated by your own mind (Isaiah 29:8)

  • If it seems to communicate something contrary to the truth found in scripture or like a nightmare, it might be demonic. You can still use this to determine what the enemy is up to! (Job 7:13-14, John 8:44)

  • Do other Spirit filled Christians believe that is from the Holy Spirit (Acts 16:9-10, 2 Corinthians 13:1)

  • Ask yourself how is the dream drawing you and other people closer to Jesus (the whole  Bible)

Once you have established that it is from God, the next recommended step is to read or recall the dream in its entirety to get a big picture of what happened in the dream. After that it is recommended if the dream is sufficiently long, to go through it in parts and use the next points as a starting point for getting the meaning of each part:

  • Ask the Holy Spirit to bring to mind the meaning (John 14:15-31, 1 Corinthians 2:16)

  • Check and see if there is a biblical element in the dream. Example: sheep are in the dream, from scripture we know that sheep often refer to people in Jesus’ care = Christians. (Ezekiel 34:31, John 10:27)

  • Ask other Christians if they are given a meaning or find someone with the gift of dream interpretation (Genesis 41, Daniel 2)
